Fridge Maintenance

Just like everything else in your home, your fridge needs to be maintained and taken care of in order for it to run and work smoothly.

Below we have listed some points in order to take care of your appliance.

Food organisation

Fridges that are overpacked may have trouble regulating cool temperatures. This is because unorganised food can prevent proper air flow inside the appliance. If your fridge isn’t cooling due to a lack of proper organisation, you can simply reorganise the items in your refrigerator to keep air vents open and accessible.

Dirty condenser coils

Condenser coils help your fridge cool properly, but they won't work if they are covered in dust, grease or spiderwebs. If your refrigerator isn’t cooling due to dirty condenser coils, you may need to give them a quick clean. Cleaning instructions for your condenser coils vary by the model of your refrigerator, so check your product manual before you begin cleaning.

Blocked air vents

If your fridge is not cooling, the air vents may be blocked. Blocked air vents can prevent cool air from filtering inside the appliance. Check the vents inside your refrigerator and freezer and remove any items that may be blocking them.

Dirty or broken gasket seals

The door gasket seals help to lock cold air inside your refrigerator. They may not seal properly if they are dirty, damaged or worn, which can cause your refrigerator to leak cool air. Inspect your door gasket seals for dirt, crumbs or other debris and wipe it away with warm soapy water. If air continues to escape after cleaning your gaskets and your fridge still is not cooling, then scheduling a service with a licensed technician may be necessary.

Blocked Fridge Drain

Blocked fridge drains can be annoying to deal with but luckily they're extremely easy to fix.

You will know when your fridge drain is blocked as water will begin to pool at the bottom of your fridge in the shelves or salad drawers. This happens as when debris gets stuck inside the drain, the water has no exit point, therefore it resorts to pooling at the bottom of your fridge.

Cleaning our fridge out every so often can prevent this debris getting caught up in the drain, but if you do find yourself with a blocked drain, here's what to do.

Mop up all the excess water which has collected in the bottom of your fridge and in the drawer or box at the bottom.

Once dry, clear the debris from the hole. You can do this with with a straw, cotton bud or pipe cleaner.

Poke whichever implement you are using into the hole, but don’t let go as this will block it further. This should help to clear the hole in a matter of seconds.

The easiest way to avoid blocked fridge drains is to regularly clean out the fridge of any dirt and debris.

You may at some point need to reset your fridges compressor. If so, here`s how you do it.

Fridge compressors make use of a low-pressure, gaseous refrigerant that helps keep your food cold. It also helps the fans to push cool air into your freezer compartments. It usually makes a humming sound which you may be familiar with when you stand near your fridge, so a sure sign that this may need to be reset is the absence of this sound.

There are 4 main steps to reset your compressor.

1. Unplug your refrigerator

Disconnect your fridge from its power source by removing the power cord from the wall outlet. You may hear some knocking noises after you do so. Make sure your fridge stays unplugged for several minutes, otherwise the reset won't work.

2. Turn off the refrigerator and freezer from the control panel

After unplugging the refrigerator, turn off the fridge and freezer using the control panel inside the fridge. To do so, set the controls to “zero" or switch them off entirely. Once you're done, you can plug your refrigerator back into the wall socket.

3. Reset your freezer and fridge temperature settings

The next step is to reset your fridge and freezer controls. Those controls vary depending on the make and model of your fridge, but experts recommend keeping your refrigerator around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For a fridge and freezer with settings 1–10, that's typically around level 4 or 5.

4. Wait for the refrigerator temperature to stabilize

The minimum time you should wait for a refrigerator temperature to stabilize is 24 hours, so don't rush things.
